“I am so glad that I live in a world where there are Octobers.” L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
Have you decorated your porch yet? One of my favorite fall traditions is picking out mums to add a pop of color to my front porch and back patio. If you maintain them properly, mums should last through Thanksgiving!
Chrysanthemums were first imported to the United States in 1790; American inventor Colonel John Stevens sourced a cultivated variety from England. A popular flower for corsages in the 20th century, mums became a homecoming tradition on college campuses; the flower was often accompanied with long ribbons spotlighting the school’s colors.
While mums come in a variety of colors, they are somewhat finicky regarding care. Read on for some tips.
Pick a Mum with tightly closed buds.
When you spot a mum bursting with color, your inclination might be to purchase it right away! Resist the urge, since the fully blooming mum is probably close to expiring. Instead, buy a mum where the buds are tightly closed. If properly watered and nurtured, it will then last until Thanksgiving.
Watch the blossoms slowly open.
Water your mum from the bottom up. Be careful not sprinkle the buds or leaves; plant rot is very prevalent in this flower, so watering properly is essential. These flowers don’t like to be soaking wet or completely dry. The buds will open slowly.
Celebrate the burst of fall color!
In addition to watering, you must also dead head non-blooming or expired flowers. This will keep your fall display healthy; your mums will provide you with brilliant color until Thanksgiving. There are many varieties and choices, with some of the best options at local farmer’s markets and grocery stores.
Happy fall y’all!
