“I’d say the first thing you need is … a pumpkin.” — Cinderella
Yesterday was chilly with heavy rains; the windy tropical storm conditions advertised (fortunately) never materialized so I headed out to pumpkin shop. I was surprised at the many colors and designs of this fall’s bounty. If orange isn’t your preferred color, there are lots of variations for creating a festive autumn display.
The story of the pumpkin began thousands of years ago in North America. For much of that time the pumpkin was largely cooked in savory dishes. It grew like a weed, making it very accessible and inexpensive. English colonists arrived to North America and were introduced to the pumpkin in the 17th century; they began cooking pumpkin since the wide variety of produce from England was not available yet in the Americas.
Fast forward to the 19th century, when industrial agriculture technology offered farmers the opportunity to source more produce types. Americans no longer needed to rely on pumpkin for food, so it became a novelty item. Read on to get a glimpse of the many varieties available now.

Fairy Tale Fun.
These pumpkins look like they could have starred as Cinderella’s coach! You might not even care when midnight strikes.
Turk’s Turban Terrific.
An interesting blend of green and orange makes these pumpkins look like they have been fired in a kiln. They would look beautiful in an arrangement with other greenery.
Mellow Yellow Madness.
When I look at this pumpkin, I think of the song “We All Live in a Yellow Submarine.” Maybe that is not a bad thing!
The small white pumpkins are my favorite. Get out your favorite glass bowl, and pile them high.
