“You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” — Dr. Seuss
Is it really fall? Not exactly, but school starts this month in the Shenandoah Valley. It may be tough to think about a return to the classroom with soaring tempertures outside, but there are lots of options to get you in the swing. It is always important to remember what a gift education is, since it wasn’t always offered to the masses.
In the early 1900s, only about half of children ages 5-19 were enrolled in school. At that time, they were mostly needed to help out working on family farms or in the growing numbers of factories founded during the Industrial Revolution. By the 1970s, however, school attendance increased to over 75%. Today those numbers are well over 90% in developed countries. Today, daily attendance is mandatory in the United States, because being present is directly correlated to student success.
The right supplies can get your student off to the right start. Take a walk through Target or Walmart and you will see a wide variety of supplies stacked sky high. We have some thoughts about selecting just the right items to get this school year started.
Choose a theme.

Animals have taken center stage in the school supply game. Tigers seem to be favored this year. It is good to be king, don’t you agree? Find coordinating supplies (think tiger stripes!) to get the look.
Snag a cute lunch bag.

We love all of the insulated bag options in the marketplace; they are so versatile. You can pack lunch or a snack or supplies – all with easy access and stylish flair. One of the youngest Feltner children is a unicorn fan!
Pack a cute throw.

Most schools offer students onsite storage – a cubby or locker. Depending on the season, you might want to keep a throw handy. We found this cute one at Walmart. A unicorn, of course!
Get your Barbie on!

Our girl, Barbie, is having a moment! Reviews of the movie have been mixed, but it is all thumbs up for Barbie’s chic outfits and accessories. Fortunately, the Dollar Tree will keep your doll in style.
