“Butterflies are nature’s angels.
They remind us what a gift it is to be alive.”
-Robyn Nola
As we approach Memorial Day, the butterfly seems like an appropriate metaphor for the change that comes with sacrifice. And in our own daily lives, seeminly unimportant acts, or omissions can make a difference.
The Shenandoah Valley is covered with battlesites from the American Civil War that ended in the spring of 1865. The war claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.
By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.
Parades, picnics and fun will dot the landscape this weekend. We have ideas on how to celebrate and remember.

Patriotic Place Setting.

You can’t go wrong with red paired with blue and the stars align for a snazzy setting.
Cool blue.

It is pretty chilly this weekend, but nothing blue in this photograph but the water. Enjoy!

The grand ‘ole flag is still grand.
Have a great weekend and start to summer.
