“Life is a carousel, it goes up and down.” — Pharrell Williams
Have you been to the Virginia State Fair? It closes this weekend, but what a run! The fair moved to its new location in 2009 at the Meadow Event Park in Caroline County. The park is on the site of Meadow Farm, the thoroughbred horse farm owned by Christopher Chenery that was the breeding home of back-to-back racing greats Riva Ridge and Secretariat, the winners of five of the six Triple Crown races in 1972 and 1973.
Fair foods – corn dogs, funnel cakes, kettle corn, cotton candy – were all around us. We had our share! But what makes any fair fun is the variety of attractions. Read on.
Monkey Business!

If you are like me, blue ribbon offerings are some of the best entertainment. The dress on this adorable stuffed monkey won a blue ribbon in the creative arts category.
Prize Ducks (if you are lucky).

Every fair midway has a unique set of games; something about the “ring a duck completely,” caught the attention of lots of folks. The prize was a three-foot tall stuffed animal. Woah.
Pony rides with a view.

The fair has pony rides for the kiddos, but we (or rather I) couldn’t resist a ticket to ride on this fabulous carousel. Best part: no chance to be thrown off!
Fishing Lure.

What’s not to like? There is definitely something for everyone at the fair. If you love to fish, then here’s your chance to be creative.
