“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” — John F. Kennedy
Memorial Day has been celebrated for over 100 years, but it wasn’t until 1968 that Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Each year, we are reminded that the life we enjoy today is possible because of our forefathers’ sacrifice.
We wish you a weekend filled with gatherings of family and friends, with a dose of remembrance.
Fly the flag.

The American flag is the perfect symbol for Memorial Day. The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
Raise the torch.

Around 1865, as the Civi War drew to a close, the French historian Edouard de Laboulaye proposed that France create a statue to give to the United States in celebration of our success in building a viable democracy. The sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, known for largescale sculptures, earned the commission. In 1885, Bartholdi completed the statue, which was disassembled, packed in more than 200 crates, and shipped to New York, arriving that June aboard the French frigate Isere. Over the next four months, workers reassembled the statue and mounted it on the pedestal; its height reached 305 feet, including the pedestal. Our global friendship is still intact today; there is even a “mini” statue in Paris!
Set the table.

Nothing is more stylish than our patriotic symbols! When you gather with friends and family to commemorate this holiday weekend, be sure to display the red, white and blue. Kimberly’s is always a good source for linens, table cloths and napkin rings; the Dollar Tree and Martins offer festive paper products this time of year.
