“Christmas is a season for kindling the fire for hospitality in the hall, the genial flame for charity in the heart.” Washington Irving
What are your traditions? Is there something special you do every year? What says “Christmas” to you? Several years ago, I was missing my friends at the holiday season. Because everyone is so busy, I decided to have a breakfast and get us together. I named it the “Doe Breakfast” and what started as a one-time event is now a tradition. The does arrive around 9:00 a.m., breakfast is served at 10:00 a.m. and folks leave whenever they need to. It is laid back and fun. The best part is that it is in my home with a fully decorated tree and lights and seasonal china. It gives me such joy to share a few hours of holiday time with these friends that go back 25 years.
How about beginning your own tradition? Use your home as the stage. Here are several ideas for getting started:
- Decide on a guest list. After you have narrowed down the target group, come up with an event. Keep in mind how busy everyone is this time of year, and pick something that will appeal. I chose a breakfast since it is at the beginning of the day; by making it a flexible event, guests feel like they can come and go.
- Pick a theme. I played on the reindeer motif for decorations and invitations. The event has developed a wonderful following, and the theme makes it memorable year after year.
- Tailor the menu and table settings to the group/theme. For example, if you want to make it really Christmasy, find some holiday china. It is all about creativity and not expense. The Dollar Tree has very attractive Christmas plates; pair them with holly and pine from your backyard for an elegant look. For less than ten dollars, you can have a festive event.
- Design a cute invite. There are lots of free programs online or use your own crafting skills to create something special.
