“What is a weekend?” Lady Grantham, Downton Abbey, season one
Have you seen the Downton Abbey movie? We saw it last night; it is amazing. The Crawley family home, Highclere Castle, is center stage. Let’s face it, any feature film that involves beautiful houses is our kind of movie. Afterwards, we celebrated with an apple crisp served on china (pictured above) with images of wildlife coupled with colorful fall napkins. Food and fun were served on the back patio; lanterns, lit with LED candles, twinkled in the darkness. Deer and squirrels and partridges are likely staples on the castle grounds; apples would be prolific from the English autumn harvest.
Even though you may not live like the Crawleys, you can still host your own Downton dinner. Here are some suggestions:
- Flowers! Lots of blooming buds in vases on the table. Or, substitute with a beautiful bowl of fresh fruit. No late 20th century jam jars or butter containers are permitted!
- Food was never laid out on tables in the grand house tables of the 1920s. If it wasn’t being served, food was usually arranged on platters and placed on a sideboard. You could offer guests a good roast and plate it in the kitchen and present it with a flourish!
- Coffee and tea were served afterwards. For a modern twist, offer your guests a seasonal coffee flavor such as pumpkin spice.
Be creative: your home is your castle.
