“I cannot live without books.” – Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, June 10, 1815
How are you? We hope just fine. We know that staying home is wearing thin, so maybe it is time for a trip. Let’s go on a great adventure.
Get your passport ready.
How about visiting a different country? You can, today, without leaving your favorite chair. Stay home, stay safe and see the world. Here are a few destinations (and books) to get you started.
- Victoria by Daisy Goodwin (England). A refreshing look at the young life of Queen Victoria where youth and love match up with charm and verve. If you need a royal fix, Victoria’s shrewd view of the palace courtiers will keep you entertained.
- Heidi by Johanna Spyri (Switzerland). The novel’s plot follows the life of a young girl in the Swiss Alps. Heidi is strong and resourceful in the presence of shifting circumstances. You will be inspired by Heidi’s resilence especially in the shadow of the novel coronavirus.
- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery (Canada). This is a classic book for children of all ages. Anne (with an “e”) adapts to new surroundings by finding solace in her literary ambitions. Netflix is the latest film outlet to offer a modern day interpretation of the solitude that marked her early years.
Look for FREE downloads.
Many ebook providers are offering free dowloads during this difficult time. Kindle has thousands of classic titles to read. The public libraries are closed to foot traffic, but the digital library is open. You can usually find a good mix of popular and classic titles. In addition, many magazines and newspapers are giving readers a free pass on their content.
